ORGANIC VANILLA PODS

Length: Approx 15-16cm
Rich and oily in texture, this highly prized aromatic bean pod can be used in any beverage, dessert or recipe that calls for powdered vanilla or vanilla essence. One bean is roughly equivalent to three teaspoons of essence.

Vanilla beans have a great deal of flavour and some people reuse them 2 or 3 times before their aroma and taste are depleted. After a pod has been used in an infusion, it can be thoroughly washed and dried (hung in the kitchen for a day or two to air dry works well), then stored in an airtight container until required again.

This is a high moisture product and exposure to heat and moisture could result in mould growth. The mould that grows on vanilla is harmless and can simply be wiped off and used, it is unlike mould that grows on cheese and bread.

Vanilla can also develop a white appearance on the ends of the pods called givre. This occurs when the vanillin reaches the surface of the beans. You can simply wipe this off the pods when it appears. It is harmless and perfectly natural, however some people see this and don't like the appearance.
